5 tips for sustainable travel in 2022
More and more people are concerned about the environment and want to do their bit to reduce their environmental impact. In this article we give you 5 tips for sustainable travel this year.
Every day we are more and more used to hearing about sustainability. More sustainable hotels, more sustainable clothes, healthy food, responsible water consumption… But, like many other of these great concepts, sustainability is such a broad concept that its use (or abuse) generates more confusion and, in the end, it remains empty.
So, as the new year begins, how to travel in a sustainable way? But not in broad strokes, really and for all budgets.
Travel by train, move by bike
Of course, there can always be exceptions. But if you can, and conditions permit, use the train instead of the plane or car. And wherever you go, cycle or walk to really enjoy the place.
Of all the modes of transport available to us – plane, boat, bus, car and train – the train is generally the least polluting. This is because it emits less CO2 and carries more people. Travel sustainably rather than not at all.
If you are thinking of moving to the south of Spain (more specifically to the Costa del Sol) in our hotel we have exceptional cycling routes that will make your stay unforgettable.
Eat local food
Do you want to know which is the best seafood in the world? Galician? Are you sure? Well, it depends, for those of us lucky enough to live on this side of the Atlantic, yes, but for those of you in Ireland, it’s Irish. And for Canadians, theirs. And it’s not because the taste is better, but because it will always be the freshest.
If that wasn’t enough, eating local and seasonal produce has a positive impact on the local economy: local businesses, restaurants, artisans, farmers… If we start eating what the locals eat, buy what they produce and give our friends typical handicrafts instead of made-in-China magnets, maybe they will start to like us a bit better too (and it’s a way of showing respect).
If you’re still not sure but you’re in the mood for good weather and gastronomy that will take your breath away, we recommend a visit to Manuka. A restaurant based on 100% natural and organic cuisine.
Support and care for natural sites
Remember that marked hiking trails are there for a reason, usually to help preserve the surrounding environment and keep native flora out of harm’s way. Take out what you brought and don’t litter. Stay away from wildlife and never feed (and try not to touch) wild animals, for your own safety and for the safety of the animals themselves.
In beach areas, use reef-safe sunscreen without harmful ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, and never step on coral or stir up sediment that can also damage the ecosystem.
If you want to enjoy some amazing nature trails, we recommend a trip to the Costa del Sol (Marbella to be more specific) to get caught up in its ambience. Here you will be able to enjoy many of its natural experiences.
Sport as a claim
Doing sport is one of the most popular resolutions at the beginning of every year. However, do you know, for example, how much pollution is caused by a marathon or a major sporting event such as the football World Cup? Certain sporting activities can also damage the environment and it is important that you know this in order to minimise their effects. Go for sustainable sport!
If you are an athlete (and even more so when you continue to do sport if you travel), here are a few tips that will always come in handy:
- Put your waste in a bin. If there isn’t one, carry it with you in your backpack or in your hand until you find a bin.
- Avoid routes through sensitive ecosystems and don’t take shortcuts through nature or cross crops, whether you are on foot, by bike or on horseback.
- Don’t waste water, buy only the equipment you need and dispense with single-use plastics and disposable materials.
- If you cycle, use environmentally friendly glues to fix punctures and avoid skidding. If you climb, minimise the use of magnesium.
Choose where to sleep well
The offer is very varied and that is positive. In addition, there are many hotels that have great initiatives in place to promote sustainability and it is quite difficult to know which ones they are if you are choosing on an internet search engine.
The key here is to know what impact the accommodation you choose has on the inhabitants of the place you are visiting. If the hotel generates local employment at all levels, promotes local culture (through gastronomy, decoration or customs) and is not designed exclusively for foreigners, but also for people from the country itself (or even from the same subcontinent), you will be doing quite well.
